Design Studies: Please Sir, Can I Have Some More?

I forgot to actually explain further into Fridays main section of the lecture, regarding communication. This, I found, was a very interesting lecture, as Jonathan pointed out to us something that we all take for granted until it is explained to us. The interesting point being that in hindsight, it was very obvious, but none of us noticed it. That communication is 90% pointless. British people, and a lot of the western world, are particular fans of said pointless communication. Pleases, thank you's, how are you's, nice weather's...these are all, in terms of conveying what you need/want to say, are useless, and therefore redundant.

He used a good example of this, in a short comic strip based around the jungle character Tarzan. He was swinging through the tree's practising what he would say to Jane when he met her. Hello there, I'm Tarzan, and you must be Jane. Good day, you must be Jane that I have been hearing so much about, I am Tarzan, etc. You get the picture. But the last image had the basics. "Me Tarzan, you Jane". Well Jonathan certainly has a point. The same is learned from short to the point words, however surely it is not being suggested that cave-man speech is better than 21st century communication?

They could literally write anything
on the back - nobody reads it, and
if they do, they sure got along fine
without it before!
This did however get me to thinking, and as we were in the lecture my interests turned to the bottle of Robinsons squash I had with me on the bench in front. As over-communcation was being discussed, I noticed that the amount on information displayed on a single straight forward, hardly deadly or hazardous bottle of squash was unbelievable. Between the symbols saying that the bottle itself was safe, and the information telling me the levels of each individual aspect of the juice - it really was overload. Why can't it just say "JUICE"? In fact, do we even need the word? If there was a picture on it of a child drinking it, surely that shows it's not acid or petrol.

Although I wouldn't go as far as to say that we need to strip communication right back to grunts and neanderthal speech, I do think society needs to calm down on the political correctness of information. Funnily enough the human race has survived pretty well up until now without being told RDA's and %'s.

So what is the point in even writing this post? As, if I am to take in everything that has been discussed above, everything I have just said is pointless. Even although a blog is what is requested of us for this module. Now I'm confused...
