"Summer Social" Guest Project -- Make {FREE} Scalloped Paint Chip Art!

Hello! I am so excited to be posting at Tatertots and Jello! I'm Chris from

Jen is one of those bloggers whose workload just boggles my mind. I want to bottle up some of her energy! Alas, I have no idea how to do that—yet. Until then, I’ll remain in awe of Jen and all the wonderful things she does at her blog!

For those of you who don’t know me, you should know that I don’t like to spend money. That doesn’t mean I don’t spend money. I just don’t like to. So…when I was looking for some artwork for my bedroom, I decided to look for something free.

I grabbed some paint swatches at Home Depot (props to HD for offering free swatches!) and used a hole punch to make a bunch of circles.

Punch, punch, and then punch some more. It only took a few minutes, but my frame was pretty small. If you want something large scale, (get it? scale?) it may take you a minute.

Because I’m cheap (didn’t want to buy anything to put it on) and because I’m lazy (didn’t want to find something to cut to size, I adhered the circles straight to the glass that came in the frame. Plus, this allowed me to use the lines of my cutting mat to make sure everything stayed straight.

I had to look on the internet to make sure I knew what fish scales look like, and I just started gluing away. A little dab of craft glue at the top of each circle is all it took. Using the craft glue (as opposed to hot glue) gave me some time to move things around if they weren’t lining up well.

This is what it will look like when you’re done.

I let the glue dry for a little bit, and I turned the glass over.

Then I ran a blade down the edge of the glass to give a clean line. This way it would fit nicely into the frame.

Ta Da! I am so happy with the simplicity of it. It’s a fresh and free way to decorate, and I love that it offers some texture to the space.

When my husband was checking it out, I said, “Did you notice that I used a frame that has circles on it to match the circle design in the art?” He responded, “Circles?” Nice.

I’m not too worried, though. I’m sure you notice it. :)

Thanks to Jen and all her readers for letting me stop by today! I hope you enjoyed it!

Gift Wrapping Idea -- Make Magnet Gift Tags!!

I spent the day yesterday running errands and trying to get my Christmas put together. So now -- on to the wrapping!! And, if you are wrapping too - I'd love to share a little project I made -- Magnet Gift Tags.

These little gift tags are fun because they brighten up your package, plus they have a little magnet on top that the receiver can keep and use all year long!

Magnet Gift Tags

Supplies:

Metal Sheet -- I found mine at my craft store. But Home Depot also sells magnet sheets in the roofing area.

Dimensional Magic (or similar glaze)

Scrapbook Paper (this is a great way to use up leftover paper)

Embellishments

Ribbon

Magnets

Bottlecaps -- if you don't have any saved, you can buy a pack of 6 at Hobby Lobby.

Fabric Scraps

Here's What You Do:

1.  Cut out a 1 inch square of scrapbook paper. You can use a punch, or a template to make the circle precise.

2. Glue the circle to the bottom of the bottlecap. I used Mod podge. Then put a layer of mod podge over the top of the paper. Let dry.

3. Fill the bottlecap up with the Dimensional Magic glaze. While the glaze is wet, you can add some little buttons or charms. And you can also sprinkle some glitter on the top of the glaze. Let the glaze dry overnight.

4. While the bottlecaps are drying, work on the tags. Cut out your metal tags. If you are using thick metal sheeting, use tin snips. I cut my tags to 2 inches in width by 4 inches in length. Punch a hole at the top, middle of each tag.

5. Hot glue a square of fabric to the middle of the metal tag.

6. Hot glue additional ribbon and/or other embellishments to the tag.

7. Add some fabric to the top of the tag and loop though the punched hole.

8. When the bottlecaps are dry, hot glue any other embellishments to the top. I copied the names of the recipients to the bottlecap by cutting some scrapbook paper into 8.5 x 11 sheets and running them through my printer.

9. Hot glue a magnet to the back of each bottlecap and attach the bottlecap to the metal tag.

And these Gift Tags can be used for any occasion - so make up a batch to have on hand for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Valentine's Day or pretty much any type of gift!
Happy Wrapping and Happy Holidays!!

Guest Project -- Make a Thanksgiving Blessing Board!

Hello all, this is Heather from WhipperBerry! I am soooo excited that Jen invited us WhipperChicks to guest post today on Tatertots & Jell-o! {Giddy!}
With Thanksgiving fast approaching, I started thinking it would be lovely to have a place for people to write down and display what they are thankful for at your gathering.
WB 113
So…I came up with the idea for a blessing board and here is how you too can make one…
WB 1
First, you need to find a open frame that you like.  I found this one on clearance at a frame store.  Didn’t love the color, loved the price, so I spray painted…
WB 2

…and distressed a little with some sandpaper.
WB 3
Next, I drilled holes in the inside of the frame.  I didn’t measure, I just placed holes roughly two inches apart.  I didn’t want them to be perfect because I wanted the twine to have a more natural feel once strung.
I then installed Screw Eyes in each of the holes.  I chose screw eyes so that I could restring the frame with ribbon or another material if I wanted later.
WB 4  WB 5
Using heavy weight hemp twine I threaded each of the screws going back in forth.
WB 6
WB 7
Now the fun part begins, embellishing.  I wanted to keep the frame rather neutral so that once Thanksgiving was over I could use the display board for other things.  Think Christmas cards, Valentines, children’s artwork or school work.
The “give thanks” board is created with a basic precut birch wood board from the craft supply store.  Spray painted, distressed and then attached with Scotch Dual Lock Fasteners.  It’s kind of the bigger and much stronger brother to Velcro and I found that at Target.
WB 141
For the “Give” I used brown vinyl and my lovely Cricut.  The “thanks” is created with chip board letters from the craft store, glued on.  I then embellished with burlap and sweater flowers.
WB 150
Emily our paper genius at WhipperBerry fancied up some basic clothes pins with spray paint, paper and Mod Podge.  She also created a fun printable subway art tag for your guest to write down what they are grateful for.
WB 148
Voila, you are ready for your feast!
Well…at least you have a cute blessing board, you still have a lot of cooking to do!
If you would like an opportunity to win this blessing board come on over to WhipperBerry and enter our Blessing Board Giveaway!

Thanks Jen, for the opportunity to stop by and say hello.  We are truly honored!
Kisses from the WhipperChicks!!
