Resume Doctor

Your CV or Resume is the first thing a potential employer will see before you are able to make the 'first impression' at the interview. Loft Resumes turns your vanilla-looking resume into a beautifully custom designed one that stands out from the crowd. Why don't more graphic designers offer this service? Why don't more people (non-designer types) think of getting their CV designed???? Genial!

How to deliver a proof

Gavin Martin Colournet were looking to raise their profile within the design industry. The proof bags and tubes which they use to deliver proofs, presented an untapped opportunity as a mobile advertising canvas. Magpie Studio seized the opportunity to make them a little more eye catching and memorable and act as a traveling ad when dropping off or picking up proofs, as well as increasing the chances of them being kept. A great marketing opportunity taken advantage of!

Alpha on the Inspiration Hut

New*new*new, my Fairways direct mail proposal has been featured on the Inspiration Hut blog. Click here for the link. A very big thank you to Tom and Abbie for the feature! Their blog is a really well designed pro blog, with goodies such as links to free photoshop brushes, fonts, colour schemes, hi-res photos and more in the freebies section, posts on photography, typography, and all things designs and art related. Check it out for some inspiration, reference, or just to satisfy your curiosity.

Below is a post I found on the blog, a photographic project by Reclarkgable of Madrid looking at stereotypes. The photographer uses the same couple and photographs them as different stereotype very convincingly. You can see the pictures on behance.

Alpha's ReMade at the Urban Soul Festival

Pauline Kael once said, 'Trash has given us an appetite for art.' This rings true in the case of ALPHA's ReMade recycling project. Products are made using only found materials (printed paper, discarded magazines and dated ad banners). All A5 notebooks and ad bags are handmade, making each individual and unique. ReMade will be paticipating in the Pantheon Gallery's Urban Soul Festival this year, in Nicosia, where the books and bags will be available for purchase. See more of the artsist and musicians involved on the USF's facebook group. Be there of be square!

Design & Design International Awards

Three new awards and a showcase (so far - muahaha), to be published in the forthcoming Book of the Year, Vol 3 due to be released Dec 2010. Thank you to the folks over at D&D, you've made me a very proud [temporarily self-admiring] designer.

ReMade (again)

When I was doing placements back in 2008/9, something I would do is collect scrap paper that had been printed on and discarded, and I would make A5 sketchbooks and gift them to the designers of that studio or agency. They were very much appreciated by some, particularly when I customized them for each person, as I had at Blue Marlin (surfer boy got a surf baby book and another designer had her child's drawing on her desk which I photocopied for her book cover). You can see the books on my site and below (click on image to enlarge).

Now that I don't have a neat little spiral machine (my binding of choice at the time) I've decided to make pocket sized booklets which I've folded, sewn into sections and glued into the cover. The printed pages are in the folds, while the white side is free to write on. I've only used found materials, which is why most covers are from magazines and a local free press zine called Avant Garde. I'll be selling these at Pantheon Gallery's Urban Soul music and art festival in September. For the meantime, here are some shots:

Lots of 'firsts' in the next sentence: Our first proposal for our first client as a collective. You can see our collective site here. For this project the team consists of myself (branding & graphics), Dino Kouyialis (illustrator), Constandinos Economides (Interior & product design) and Dionysis Dionysiou (writing & sales). More to come...

UK Calendar Graphs photos

Last night I had my calendar graphs photographed by Nicos Louka and I'm very happy with the results. I previously posted digital pic here. Just in case you don't remember what the project is about:
The concept was conceived after gathering all the UK’s religious holidays, notable dates and bank holidays. The UK has 32 official holidays, displayed on the A1 circular graph calendars of 2009 and 2010. The relationship between holiday, month, day and type is made using connecting lines of different weights, with thicker lines representing more widely celebrated holidays
WATCH THIS SPACE...
Part of the project was experimenting with different ways to show the information. One of my initial designs was a pic chart which you can here.

Clever little things

Business cards were once considered the face of your business. It's the little thing you left with a person you've met, the little thing that will remind them of you when they look at it. The little thing that essentially represents you and your business. The standard business card size is 55mm x 95mm. Not a very large space at all, but it's large enough for these designers to have done these amazing works. All images found on It even as a watermark (remember the scene in American Psycho where Christian Bales break into a sweat from his jealousy of a coworkers card that has a watermark, classic!). A fitting name for a blog all about business cards. Sometimes these can verge on just being a gimmick, but if successful, they can be a hit. I previously posted other business cards I liked here.
